Ham — Swiss Melts — The Warmth You Come Back To Every Week

November RecipeSpinoff community, grateful for the belonging, writing about gratitude and food and the particular thankfulness of a woman who has two books and a grandson and a blog and a kitchen. The week was the life. The life was the cooking. The cooking was the love. And the love was the week, and the week was one of the weeks that stack together to become the years, and the years become the life, and the life is the woman at the stove who cooks and writes and loves and does not stop.

I made she-crab soup on Sunday — the anchor, the constant, the practice. The soup was perfect. The perfection was the practice. And the practice continues, one Sunday at a time, one bowl at a time, one life at a time, the woman stirring, the roux thickening, the kitchen warm, the family fed, the love alive.

She-crab soup is my Sunday anchor, but it’s not the only warmth this kitchen produces — and if there’s anything a week like this one teaches you, it’s that comfort takes many forms, and all of them are worth making. These Ham — Swiss Melts are the kind of thing I reach for when the family needs something honest and warm on a weeknight, something that asks very little of you and gives a great deal back. Like all the best kitchen rituals, they’re simple, they’re steady, and they taste like belonging.

Ham & Swiss Melts

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 25 minutes | Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 8 slices sturdy sandwich bread or 4 hoagie rolls, split
  • 3/4 lb deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 6 oz Swiss cheese, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
  2. Make the butter spread. In a small bowl, stir together the softened butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth and combined.
  3. Assemble the melts. Lay the bread slices or roll halves open on the prepared baking sheet. Spread the butter mixture evenly over each piece. Layer the ham generously over the bottom halves, then top with Swiss cheese slices.
  4. Close and press. Place the top halves of bread or rolls over the cheese. Gently press each sandwich down to help them hold together. Spread any remaining butter mixture over the tops.
  5. Bake. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 12–15 minutes, until the bread is golden and toasted and the cheese is fully melted and slightly bubbling at the edges.
  6. Rest and serve. Remove from the oven and let rest for 2 minutes before slicing. Serve warm alongside a simple green salad or a cup of soup.

Naomi is a retired librarian from Charleston who spent thirty-one years putting books in people's hands and now spends her days putting her mother's Lowcountry recipes on paper before they're lost. She survived her husband's affair, her father's sudden death, and the long goodbye of her mother's final years. She cooks she-crab soup in a bowl that Carolyn brought from Beaufort, and in every spoonful you can taste the marsh and the memory and the grace of a woman who chose to stay and rebuild.
